Bandée avec la main jusqu’au XIV<sup>e</sup> siècle, l’arbalète l’est alors avec le cric, un crochet à pied de biche, ou un cranequin.</p> <p class="2-Paragraphe" style="text-align: justify;">Interdite à plusieurs reprises dans les combats entre chrétiens, notamment lors du 2<sup>e</sup> concile du Latran (1139), l’arbalète est une arme dangereuse et facile à manier. Elle permet un tir tendu, à une bonne portée (300 m pour les plus perfectionnées) et se prête aussi bien à la chasse qu’à la défense et à l’attaque d’enceintes urbaines ou de châteaux, comme le montre l’exemple de la blessure infligée au futur Louis XI par un arbalétrier de Dambach-la-Ville en 1444.</p> <p class="2-Paragraphe" style="text-align: justify;">Sa valeur militaire et son prix (trois livres à la fin du XIV<sup>e</sup> siècle, une livre vers 1445) en font l’« étalon de mesure » des paix castrales du XV<sup>e</sup> siècle : pour pouvoir être hébergé dans une place réglementée par un ''burgfrieden'', un hôte doit acquitter un loyer en argent proportionnel à son statut et remettre à la copropriété un certain nombre d’arbalètes : en 1422, au Nideck, un prince acquitte 20 florins et livre deux arbalètes valant chacune 4 florins, un gentilhomme 4 florins et une arbalète, un homme de guerre (roturier) 2 florins et une arbalète.</p> <p class="2-Paragraphe" style="text-align: justify;">Cette arme donne lieu à une grande diffusion, attestée par des inventaires et par des découvertes archéologiques. Elle passe pour un symbole de liberté, illustré par l’exploit de Guillaume Tell (une légende familière depuis la fin du XV<sup>e</sup> siècle) et, de ce fait, incarne une forme de transgression qui peut être canalisée par des règlements de chasse ou d’autres ordonnances. Vers 1502, l’évêque de Strasbourg, le comte palatin, les successeurs des Lichtenberg, les Ribeaupierre et les Fleckenstein s’accordent pour en proscrire le port (et celui d’arquebuses) sur les chemins ou dans les forêts de leur mouvance.</p> <p class="2-Paragraphe" style="text-align: justify;">L’usage sportif des arbalètes et des arquebuses qui finissent par les supplanter à partir du début du XV<sup>e</sup> siècle est encadré par des sociétés de tir qui rivalisent de dextérité dans des concours régionaux ou interrégionaux.</p> <p class="2-Paragraphe" style="text-align: right;">'''Georges Bischoff'''</p> <br />
